Good to be back

Mon Jul 13, 2020 9:49 pm

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking for a while but am just now getting around to posting on here. Figured I would share some of my thoughts and experiences with MGO2R.

A little backstory on me...some of you may or may not remember me from MGO2, back then my main character was oregonav8r. If that doesn't sound familiar, no surprise, it probably shouldn't be. I was never that good at the game, maybe average to slightly above average at best. I will readily admit I complained way more than I should have, and in a lot of ways took the game too seriously. Nonetheless it's one of the best online gaming experiences that I've ever played. Nothing else has come close to replicating it. I was a member of several different clans throughout my time...Demons of Razgriz, Royal Divinity, Pandas, and Static, to name a few. Oddly enough, out of those, I think Royal Divinity was my favorite. Great group of people. We lost the majority of our survival matches but that team had a heart and soul like no other. I've never lost so many times and had fun doing it. I was also very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to be a member of PBO on the EU server. I got quite a bit of backlash from that, as most said I wasn't good enough to be on their team. In retrospect, looking back, that assessment was probably accurate. However, Merkent was a cool guy and let me join anyways, and I was decent enough to keep up with them most of the time.

I played a little MGO3 when MGS5 came out, and needless to say, I was incredibly disappointed. I tried to force myself to like it and get into it, but I just couldn't. It had nothing of the appeal or satisfaction that MGO2 had. I've actually been aware of the SaveMGO project for quite some time. When I learned of the project, at first, I was against it, mainly because some of the people who resurrected it were former glitchers. In time, my opinion slowly shifted, and I saw the game was still alive and seemingly doing well.

In late 2018, I was away for a 3 week training assignment for work. I took my laptop along, and during some of my downtime, ended up watching some old MGO videos I had saved (I also recorded and uploaded some stuff on youtube). That's when I decided that I was going to return. When I got back home I dusted off my old original fat PS3 and went to work. Created an account and signed in. As I did I simply couldn't believe that it was possible and that I was back in the lobby. I created a simple TDM and waited for someone to join. Someone finally did and I got completely destroyed, having not touched the game in over 6 years, but it was so much fun.

From here on I played occasionally when I could, and enjoyed it immensely. I was (and still am) absolutely terrible, but I didnt care. It was just good to be back and play again. As luck would have it, my old original model PS3 finally died, with my MGS4 disc trapped inside. Sony no longer supported that model, and none of the local places I contacted wanted anything to do with it. So, I took the damn thing apart to rescue my disc, and ended up getting a used PS3. A part of me still laughs whenever I think of that. Oh, the things we are willing to do in order to keep playing this beloved game. Fast forward to more recently, after another long stretch of not playing I decided to login, and.....an update is required? What?!? I couldn't believe what I was looking at. But once version 1.4 installed and I saw the change of the intro screen...my mind was blown. To think that a game had received an update after so many years...this is what got me really excited to play again.

In my time back, I have noticed that overall, I feel that the community is better than it used to be. I'm aware that there's still trash talking but I haven't seen a lot of it. For the most part, people seem to play and enjoy it without taking it too seriously. I see less aborting now which is awesome. Overall it has beena really positive experience. For the most part I've just been playing solo, and joining open mix games when they're hosted, or if there isn't anything, I might jump into a TDM or SNE room. While it's been a lot of fun, I recently found myself missing the social aspect of the game and interacting with others who enjoy the game. I don't get to play very often these days but I do plan to get on when I can. My hope is that this small but dedicated group of players will continue to do the same and keep this game alive for a while longer.

To all of the people who made it possible to play this game again, you have my thanks. When it shut down in 2012, if someone told me I would be back in 8 years to play again, there's no way I would've believed it. But that just goes to show how special this game is to so many people. If you actually read my rambling this far, well done. ;D Hope to see you all online!

Glad you're enjoying it!
The update wasn't very big, but I wanted to bring out something special for the people who've been around all this time. Nice to have something new in this honestly, pretty old game.
I'm glad you think the community is better these days. It's a slow process but I hope things are changing in the right direction.

Wow, the legendary Oregonav8r??? You're back?!!! That's amazing. Damn, I've missed hearing you in-game and remember enjoying your YouTube videos, too. It's great to see that you're back.

Hi Mumra!

Haha I appreciate the compliment but I am nowhere near legendary. It's still amazing to me how bad I am at the game now compared to 10 years ago. Every once in a while I'll have a couple good matches and think "yeah, there's the old Ore I used to be" and then I'll go right back to getting destroyed and hugging 12th place every round, lol.

The difference between now and 10 years ago is mostly my attitude. Back then, I cared way too much, and subsequently let a bad night of survival affect my mood. These days I'm much more easy going. I know I suck, but it's still fun to play.

Now, if you could just somehow convince merkent to make a comeback. :D

Hey, you rolled with PBO, created friendly and awesome YouTube content when there were so few of us at the time out there repping MGO2. And you were such a cool guy when gaming with, you certainly represented NA servers with distinction.

Sadly for me, I think I improved, skill-wise on MGO2R. With my timezone and availability to play I've had some hours against skilled JP players who always seemed to know how to play this game well without skipping a beat.

I'm glad you're more easy going. I suppose the lack of Survival and Tournament might help with that (along with age and wisdom, maybe!). I know what you mean though. That hype of the Survival lobby music and squaring up with the crew to face others together, it brings about great memories.

Merkent? Damn, I don't have any authority on this next comment but feel he's not returning any time soon. I suspect it's more likely to find him playing a Fifa game these days, perhaps. The thing is, if I remember correctly, just like myself Merkent (and many others) retired from the Official Konami servers version of the game long before they officially closed. By then, BF3 was out and great for the clan gaming experience. Which let's face it, can't have been difficult by comparison. I don't miss the days of rigged Tournament rooms and how badly glitchers were everywhere.

PBO was an amazing clan to roll with. Getting to join them definitely wasn't due to any super impressive skill on my part, but rather, once I got to know Merkent he invited me to join. I remember him saying we had similar playstyles, and playing with a clan of that caliber definitely improved my game with tactics and playing smartly, as opposed to just running and gunning constantly. I was an outsider to most of them, but Merkent convinced the clan that I was good enough to play with them and they all welcomed me. Some great times playing with them. I still feel like the rest of them were all on a level above me, but most of the time I did well enough in the matches to not make Merkent regret his decision to allow me in. :D

You're right, being older and more mature now definitely allows me to have a different perspective on the game ("it's just a game"). Sure I'll still get frustrated sometimes but whereas before I'd let it really get to me, now it's more like eh, whatever. I do wish the game had more people playing it regularly. That's part of why I'm making a point to get on and play when I can. I'm also going to try to recruit some old MGO2 friends to come back and give it another go. I'm hopeful that if/when the game is available for PC, that will bring an influx of new players as well. Maybe even some legit newbies. Problem is the game is so unforgiving to bran new players that most would probably play a few times and then give up due to getting constantly wrecked.

I do wish the Japan hosts were more accepting of non-Japan players. Their lobby usually has 150+ at peak time. I did happen to meet one group of players that hosts a SNE room and they accept people from all servers. Really fun to play with them, they don't seem to take it too seriously and I usually have several good laughs throughout. I do like how the Japan players are very objective focused as well, and I remember this from playing some Japan survival back in the day.

I can't say I miss the glitchers in survival or the rigged tournaments either. Part of why I waited to long to get MGO2R was due to worries that it was going to be a giant glitch fest, but I've been pleasantly surprised. Think I've only encountered one, maybe two glitchers at most that I can think of. The game is surprisingly clean now, just needs more players.

I am glad that I got to play some survival with you! I fondly remember our night on NA survival when Merkent also joined us, that was so much fun.

Crossplay PC and PS3 MGO2R, maybe even with Survival & Tourney finally figured out, all non-regional? Damn, I'd love it!

That's the joy and pain of this great game. That learning curve is steep, so steeeeeeeep. The impression I get is that new players to any game are not that inclined to want to invest the time and dedication required to get the most out of it. (Shit, did I just accidentally analogise greatness in MGO2 to life itself???!) :P

So much I agree with here, man. But at least your timezone of availability doesn't have you rely on them to play (i hope). Only too well I remember many hours spent waiting for any opportunity to play and it would be the JP players who would take me in... but only for a short while. It was near inevitable that by the time players would populate the sparse room that they would request the red ping get kicked - and then that would be the end of my gaming for the day. It sucked for me but I understood.

Damn straight. And when you do see any glitchers, please do report them to Ghz (preferably with a recording). The curbing of glitchers is a saving grace of MGO2R.

I'm glad I still have recordings of those times. I swear many of us EU players were playing half-asleep. The struggle of waiting until 2am or 3am (depending on daylight savings time) to play survival all over again on NA servers... what a challenge. Great times! I remember that we were so much more relaxed than when playing on our own servers, too. We basically socialised over Skype in the waiting lobby chatting and then played casual when it was our time and had serious fun. Great times, indeed.

Hey Ore, how are you and your family holding up, back in Oregon? I hope you and yours are able to have been one of the fortunate ones.
